Day-Wise Itinerary for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra Overland Tour from USA via Kathmandu

Your sacred Kailash Yatra from USA begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal. This city serves as the spiritual and logistical gateway for pilgrims traveling from the United States to Mount Kailash. Upon arrival, our representative will greet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel. After check-in, relax and recover from your long international journey. In the evening, enjoy vegetarian meals and a short briefing about the upcoming Kailash Manasarovar pilgrimage.

After breakfast, embark on a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu’s most sacred Hindu temples, including Pashupatinath Temple, Jal Narayan (Budhanilkantha), and Guheshwari Temple. These holy visits are an important spiritual preparation for pilgrims starting their Mount Kailash Yatra from USA. After lunch, attend the official yatra briefing, submit documents for final permits, and prepare your gear for the high-altitude journey. Evening prayers and rest at the hotel.

Today, your overland journey from Kathmandu to the Nepal–Tibet border begins. Drive through scenic mountain roads and river valleys as you travel toward Rasuwagadhi, the official border point for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. This route is part of the traditional land path used by pilgrims traveling from the USA to Kailash via Nepal. Overnight stay at a hotel near the border with full vegetarian meals.

After breakfast, complete immigration and customs formalities on both the Nepal and China sides of the border. Once cleared, drive to the Tibetan town of Kerung, located at high altitude. This marks your official entry into Tibet, the land of Mount Kailash. Today is dedicated to acclimatization, which is crucial for all USA pilgrims undertaking the Kailash Yatra. Overnight stay at a local hotel.

Travel from Kerung to Saga, crossing high mountain passes and vast Tibetan plateaus. En route, enjoy breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks such as Mount Shishapangma and Gauri Shankar. This scenic drive allows pilgrims from the USA to gradually adjust to the altitude while approaching the sacred Mount Kailash region. Evening at leisure with warm meals and rest at Saga.

Today is one of the most spiritually significant days of the Kailash Yatra from USA. Drive toward the holy Lake Manasarovar, considered the purest lake in Hinduism and Buddhism. From Horchu Pass, enjoy your first divine glimpse of Mount Kailash. Upon arrival, perform meditation and prayers at the lakeside monastery. Overnight stay near Lake Manasarovar.

Early morning, pilgrims from the USA perform sacred rituals and take a holy dip at Lake Manasarovar, believed to cleanse sins and purify the soul. After completing spiritual activities, drive to Darchen, the base camp for Mount Kailash Parikrama. This day is reserved for rest, preparation, and spiritual contemplation before starting the Kailash circumambulation trek.

Drive to Tarboche and begin the first day of Mount Kailash Parikrama. Trek toward Derapuk Monastery, located near the north face of Mount Kailash. This sacred walk is the heart of the Kailash pilgrimage from USA and offers powerful spiritual experiences for devotees. Enjoy close views of Mount Kailash’s snow-covered peaks and overnight stay at a guest house.

Today is the most demanding yet spiritually rewarding day of the Kailash Yatra from USA. Trek across Dolma La Pass (5,600 meters), the highest point of the journey, and visit the holy Gauri Kund. This day symbolizes rebirth and purification for pilgrims undertaking the Mount Kailash pilgrimage from USA. Continue trekking to Zuthulphuk for overnight stay.

After breakfast, trek back to the vehicle pickup point. Drive to Darchen, marking the completion of the sacred Mount Kailash Parikrama. Continue the return journey toward Saga via Lake Manasarovar. This day concludes the main spiritual objective of the Kailash Yatra for USA pilgrims.

Drive from Saga back to Kerung through scenic Tibetan landscapes. Enjoy peaceful views and reflect on your divine experience at Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. Overnight stay at the hotel in Kerung.

Cross the Tibet–Nepal border and drive back to Kathmandu. Transfer to the hotel and relax after completing the once-in-a-lifetime Kailash pilgrimage from USA. Evening free for rest or personal prayers.

Policy & Terms

Clothing:
Casual wears and comfortable walking shoes are the rule of Tibet. Be sure to bring warm clothing as nights and early mornings can be quite chilly to cold. Indian Pilgrims are advised strictly not to wear Sari during this Yatra. Bring all the film, medicine, cosmetics, personal toilet items etc. that you will need from home as these are difficult if not impossible to obtain on the way. A small first aid kit is also a good idea. Also quite useful is a route map, to know where you are going and have been each day.

What to Take:
Winter wear: Gore-Tex material, though expensive, is highly recommended. Down jacket, raincoat or windbreakers, thermal under wears, Jackets, warm trousers & woolen shirts (cotton will also do), warm sweaters, woolen gloves, sun hat, comfortable shoes, light leather boots in case of snow, woolen balaclava ('monkey cap') & scarf/dust mask to protect your eyes & nose from dust

Bring With You:
You may bring the snacks for along the way such as chocolates, dry fruits, toffees, glucose, namkeen etc. Strong water bottle & water purifying tablets. Health:
This is one of the toughest high altitude road journeys on earth. You Must be physically fit - no two ways about that. Generally patients with asthma & heart problems have a problem acclimatizing to high altitudes. In your interests it is essential you should be examined by your doctor to know about your health condition and your ability to cope up with the rigors of high altitude travel for days in 'no road' conditions, extreme cold, dust, trekking to an altitude of 18500ft during the Parikrama, etc.

Altitude Sickness:
As you are traveling over high terrain, you are likely to experience symptoms and discomfort of altitude sickness (headache, loss of appetite, nausea, exhaustion, sleeplessness, breathlessness etc.) until your body adjusts to the elevation. This can take a couple of days or more depending on an individual. For this reason alone, we have made it mandatory to stay 2 nights at Mansarovar (4550M) moving on to the higher altitudes.

Drink plenty of water, be calm, and do not exercise. Do not drink alcohol or smoke prior to and during the tour. We also recommend you carry a strip of diamox tablets. We provide Gamow bag (a special equipment to prevent sickness from high altitude) on this tour.

Currency:
The unit of Chinese currency is Yuan. USD 1 = 6.96 Yuan &1 Yuan = INR 13.15 approx. (as of December 2025). Money can be exchanged at Bank of China at Zhangmu or from the locals at Zhangmu or Kodari. Exchange all you’re remaining Yuan at the end of the trip at Zhangmu before re-entering Nepal.
